Crossing of the state border in a vehicle
What documents are required for a vehicle registered in a foreign country, when crossing the BiH state border?
The Law on Basics of Traffic Security on the Roads of BiH regulates that, when driving a motor vehicle and a trailer vehicle registered in a foreign country, the driver must have the following:
- A valid certificate about the vehicle registration,
- Registration plates for that vehicle, issued by the competent authority of the country where the vehicle was registered,
- International symbol of the country,
- International document for vehicle liability insurance, valid for the BiH territory (the green card or border insurance policy).
What insurance is required for a vehicle registered abroad, and what if the vehicle has no required insurance when crossing the border? Can border insurance be purchased at border crossing points, and if so, at which ones?
Article 211 of The Law on Basics of Traffic Security on the Roads of Bosnia and Herzegovina („Official Gazette of BiH“, No. 06/06, 75/06, 44/07, 84/09, 48/10 and 18/13) regulates that the motor and trailer vehicles registered in a foreign country must have international document for vehicle liability insurance, valid on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina (the green card).
In case that during border checks the driver was found not to have this document, he is sent to get the border insurance in the border crossing point area. The price of the border insurance depends on the price list of the insurance company.
The list of border crossing points at which it is possible to purchase border insurance for vehicles, can be found on the Border Police BiH website – under Information Section.
